Hello. My name is Nicole, and I love Christmas.
Whew! That wasn’t so hard. And why should it be? Christmas is FUN for crying out loud. I get ridiculously excited every year when our local radio station starts playing all holiday music all the time. I leave my radio tuned to that station from they day they start until the day they stop. (And it’s always too soon when they stop! Everyone knows it’s still Christmas until the twelfth day!)
I love seeing the red, green, and silver lights go up. I love it when my kids can’t stop talking about writing letters to Santa Clause. I love the Nativity scenes and special prayers, the wrapping paper and decorations, the bustle of the stores and pumpkin spice lattes. I even love it when businesses start putting up their Christmas sale displays. I suspect that Buddy the Elf might have been secretly based on me.
It’s exciting! People are joyful and smiling. The air smells different, even if it’s not cold yet. There’s an intangible feeling of knowing that something wonderful is coming, and the anticipation of the wondrous event is just as beautiful as the miracle itself.
But I know, there is a growing population of people who want all this early Christmas stuff to just stop. I’m being assaulted with Christmas everywhere I go! I can’t escape it!
Really? Assaulted? Love, peace and joy are assaulting you? The children smiling and dreaming of sugar plums are getting on your last nerve? The way some people complain about it, you’d think Santa Clause and his reindeer ran over their grandma.
You know what all that whining sounds like to me? Cranky, cranky, wah-wah-wah. Look, you don’t have to like it. I don’t like everything you like. A whole lot of people share the world, and it’s generally considered impossible to please everyone. You can listen to a different radio station, you know. You can ignore the Christmas sale ads just like you ignore any other ad for stuff you don’t want. (Honestly, do people even complain about political ads this much?)
But it’s taking over Thanksgiving! Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday, and it’s getting the shaft!
Guess what. I love Thanksgiving too. I celebrate Thanksgiving with my family. We eat turkey and stuffing and way too much other food. We share what we’re thankful for. We make paper pilgrim hats and read books about Squanto and visit with family members we haven’t seen in months. I’m not a football fan, but I’ll even sit down and watch the game for the sake of getting into the holiday spirit. Thanksgiving is awesome. And somehow, despite the naysayers’ insistence to the contrary, I’m able to celebrate and enjoy Thanksgiving and listen to Christmas carols at the same time. Imagine that!
And really, do you think that if it weren’t for Christmas, we’d all be listening to pilgrim music throughout November? What is Christmas taking away from you?
Look, I get that there are people who find all the joy and peace and love a little too saccharin sweet. They’re just not into it. Or maybe they can only take a couple of weeks (or days) of all the celebrating. That’s fine. You don’t have to be into it. But just know that I do love it. All of it. So do a lot of other people. The early Christmas celebrating isn’t going to go away. Wouldn’t we all be a lot happier if we just stopped fighting it?
And to all of my fellow Christmas Crazies, a Very Merry Early Christmas!
