Hello blogging friends! I’m starting a new feature this week called “Writing Quote Tuesday.” I like to google quotes from incredible authors pretty frequently, and this is my way of sharing some of my favorites with you.
Today’s quote comes from one of the great novelists of the 20th Century, Elmore Leonard:
“If it sounds like writing, I rewrite it. Or, if proper usage gets in the way, it may have to go. I can’t allow what we learned in English composition to disrupt the sound and rhythm of the narrative.”
Words to live by!
I like that viewpoint, and I agree with it. The problem is, will agents and editors?…
Great idea for a weekly topic.

I sure hope so, Carrie, because a lot of my fiction is in first person character voice. I think if you find the right agent, they will. The trick is, you have to know the rules before you break them, and you have to break them strategically. I love Elmore Leonard!

For the most part I agree. My novel is first person narrative and it’s written how that person would tell the story, fragmented sentences and all.
